The Strange Box

“Hey! Come here! Look at what I have found!” My bosom buddy, Tom shouted elatedly. We were playing enthusiastically along the seashore, looking for colourful seashells to pick when I heard Tom let out an animated yell.

I rushed towards him. He was triumphantly pointing at a mysterious red box, with the bold letters painted on it, “Treasure Island Treasure Box”, barely able to contain his excitement. “Let’s open it!” he yelled enthusiastically. I peered inquisitively at it. I had a feeling inside me that told me not to do it, but my curiosity aroused, I removed the lid. Tatum! I could not believe what I saw: Treasure! Yes, it was treasure! Gold coins, yes, glittering gold coins; We were going to be rich! I could not express my excitement at the sight of the coins gleaming in the afternoon sun. I felt as if I was a marauding pirate in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island!

Tom knelt down beside the box, delightedly scooping out the coins in his cupped hands. I was about to reach for some coins when I felt my conscience pricking me. Had I not been taught by my teachers, my parents not to take things which did not belong to me? It was wrong. My mind could vividly visualise the owner of the box searching desperately for it. I knew that I just could not do it. Mustering up my courage, I managed to say a resounding, “No!”

Tom looked at me astonished. “Are you out of your mind? Can’t you imagine all the interesting computer games and gameboys we could buy with it?”

Gameboys? Did I hear it wrongly? Tom, being my best friend, must have known it was my Achilles heel. I had a great weakness for the latest electronic games and could not resist the thought of buying another gameboy, not since my mother had confiscated my last one just two weeks ago. Just thinking about putting my hands over the device and playing with it, levelling up step by step made my mind whirl with excitement. I paused for a moment or two before silently slipping the coins into my pocket. “Anyway, who has not heard of the phrase ‘finders’ keepers, losers’ weepers’?” I told myself happily. I smiled contentedly as I thought about all of the things that I could do with this money. But first, I would treat both of us to a cone of delicious ice-cream to celebrate our newly found treasure.

I turned around only to see a shell-shocked man in a colourful T-shirt staring horrified at me. “What are you doing with the coins in the box? I had them custom made for a treasure hunt!” My heart skipped a beat. It was impossible! I could not believe my ears. I took a closer look at the coins. How daft had I been? However realistic they seemed at first, they were as worthless as paper when you noticed the words, “Made in Treasure Island”! All my plans of what I was going to do with the “money” vanished into thin air like a whiff of smoke. It was a bittersweet feeling. I did not know whether to laugh at my foolishness and naivety, or feel embarrassed about my greed and gullibility. I looked at Tom; he was hanging his head sheepishly. We threw the coins back into the chest before mumbling an apology and walking away quickly.

A few days later, we decided to go scuba diving. Suddenly, I heard another shout.

“Look at that!” I leapt off my boat and dived into the water only to see Tom in the water pointing at a strange looking box hidden in an unnoticed coral away from the busy scuba-diving area. Having learnt my lesson, I said, “I hope it’s not another hoax!”, chuckling to myself.
